Did St. Nick Really Slap a Heretic as the Council of Nicaea?
December 10, 2025
The Catholic season of Advent began November 30th, and with that, many of the church’s Christmas traditions are popping up throughout communities. Advent wreaths with their four candles are decorating tabletops and nativity scenes patiently await Christmas day to receive the figure of baby Jesus. While Christmas is historically a Christian holiday, the Catholic church specifically has a major claim on the holiday’s traditions and stories—especially when considering the lore of Santa Claus.
The jolly red man who jumps down our fireplace is inspired by the historical St. Nikolas of Myra, a bishop for the early church in the 4th century. While little historical documentation exists concerning his history, a millennia of stories and legend portrays the man as an avid defender of children.
Why Misinformation Is Everywhere and What Centenary Students Can Do About It
December 10, 2025
Within the last couple of years, misinformation has posed one of the major challenges to society. From social media posts distributing inaccurate health advice to political rumors influencing the outcomes of elections, one can understand that false information can travel fast and impact people's thinking and actions. The problem of misinformation faces college students, including us here at Centenary College, as it influences our opinions, our social interactions, and even our academic work. It is important to understand why people believe in misinformation in order to build a more informed and responsible campus community.
Misinformation spreads among people because it is often more emotionally appealing than the truth. Human beings are wired to react well to stories that tend to evoke fear, anger, or excitement.
Centenary and Hope Connections Battle Homelessness in Shreveport
October 11, 2025
Centenary, The Highlands, and Hope Connections
A 10-minute drive east of Centenary’s campus, just past the outskirts of the Highland neighborhood boundary and tucked into the corner of the I-49 and I-20 interchange sits an industrial region of the city. After passing under I-49, the Highland greenery and homes quickly give way to cracked concrete, railways, and roads under seemingly perpetual construction. This is the home of Hope Connections, a shelter and service provider for the homeless in Shreveport and the greater Northwest Louisiana Parishes.
Surrounding Hope is crisscrossing railways by warehouses as well as construction and electrical suppliers, large open concrete lots, and a golfcart dealership. The only thing like Hope is their neighbor Christian Services which serves two meals a day, everyday, for anyone who comes. These two non-profit organizations stand in deep contrast to the industrial zone surrounding them.
