Fighting the Finals Slump on Centenary Campus
November 22, 2025
Finals week and the end of the semester are approaching at what might be a much faster rate than it feels like they should be. If you are one of the many students on campus, first year or not, who feels completely lost when it comes to finals and keeping your head above the water, here are some suggestions for on-campus resources that might help you finish out the year strong.
The professors on campus are a student’s best resource for getting help before finals. Professors want people to succeed in their classes, and they appreciate it even more when students come to them when they are having trouble instead of just suffering in silence. A lot of professors have office hours posted in their syllabi for their classes and there is always an option to make an appointment with them through email if their office hours do not work for a student. Students can also reach out to other professors of the same subject if they feel like their professor’s style of teaching or explaining topics does not work for them.
Centenary’s Pre-Law Society Holds Inaugural Meeting
October 11, 2025
This year Centenary welcomes a new organization on campus: the Pre-Law Society. PLS had their first meeting with their executive committee on Sept. 26 to get new members introduced and set out their goals and future planned events as a burgeoning organization on campus.
The president and founder of PLS is junior Sydney Welch. She wanted to start a pre-law organization at Centenary because as a freshman she did not know much about the steps that she would need to take during undergraduate in preparation for law school, and there is no specific pre-law department at Centenary. “I wanted to change that for others who came after me.” PLS secretary Basil Pugh said that a pre-law organization was “something mentioned to me when I came and toured as a thing that was trying to start,” and now Welch is the one who finally made the organization be able to come to fruition.
When Welch realized she wanted to take the steps to start the society, she went to Dr. Friesenhahn, an American politics professor who has since left Centenary, who helped her through the steps that it took to get chartered on campus. Welch, Friesenhahn, and Vice President Chana Williams also worked last year to draft a constitution and gain signatures to be approved by the Student Government Association. When it came to forming the executive board, “we all know each other really well,” said Pugh, “it was kind of a no-brainer who was going to do what.
Science Under an Hour at the Science Cafe
October 11, 2025
Have you ever wanted to know the mysteries of the universe, science at the tip of your fingers? Within less than an hour that information will be yours at the Science Cafe. One may think that the Science Cafe may just be for those in the science field, well, let me tell you that it’s not. It’s science taught in a very easy to understand way, even funny at times. After going for the first time I was hooked, and maybe you will be too.
The presentation on October 1st, led by Dr. Rudi Banerjee, like every other, helps us to understand the cosmos. What’s one thing that we wonder most about the world? One may ask “how did it begin? Where does the earth come from?” Or even “what’s everything made from?” Well statistically speaking, most people are most curious about how the world will end. So, that was what Dr. Banerjee’s presentation was about. Despite the grim topic, it really wasn’t a sad conversation. Not with some of the hilarious commentary and admirably, well placed poetry, or adorably pathetic gifs. It’s educational with a side of fun! You get put in a dark auditorium and there is nothing but talking about the world beyond with the professor.
