Women’s Flag Football Comes to Centenary
With the official addition of Flag Football to the NCAA Emerging Sport for Women program, Centenary has begun the process of bringing a team to Centenary. Currently existing as a club sport, next year will be their first official year.
In the 2024-25 school year, Head Coach Morgan Dorsey held a free flag football clinic that attracted over ninety girls from across the region. On the clinic, Coach Dorsey said, “right then I knew, this was going to be something special.”
Coach Dorsey has played flag football locally for the last couple years, saying she loves the sport and is excited for its future at Centenary. “Once I found out we were going to get a team, I was like ‘heck yeah, I want to be a part of that.’”
On competing with other college programs for possible recruits, Dorsey said, “everybody is kind of in the same spot.” While being a new program on campus makes recruiting a struggle for any sport, Dorsey believes Centenary has an advantage with colleges starting at the same level. Players are not looking for an established culture, rather at the coaches, facilities, and a place they could fit in.
Until recruitment starts bringing flag football players to Centenary, Coach Dorsey put out social media posts and emails inviting anyone interested to try out the sport. Kaitlin Sprey came to Centenary to play for the women’s soccer team, but was convinced by Coach Dorsey to also give the flag football team a try. Sprey said, “I feel really good about the team so far. We’re all bonding really well and the chemistry is looking really good.”
Coach Dorsey encourages anyone interested in the sport to get involved. “We’re trying to get members from all over the place, so it doesn’t matter if you have experience at all. We are willing to help you out in any capacity. We just want to get the word out that we have a flag football team. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Let’s experience this together.”
The team has a match against Concordia Saturday March 28. They will also face Millsaps and Wallace State Community College Saturday April 11.
