2026 Paralympics
The Paralympics recently wrapped up in Milano Cortina, Italy, with Team USA taking home numerous medals. The games began shortly after the 2026 Winter Olympics on March 6th and ended on March 15th, drawing international attention. Unlike the typical Olympic Games, the Paralympics take place every two years and alternate between winter and summer sports. This ensures ample opportunities and training for the participating athletes. This set of games features a smaller but highly competitive group of sports, including sled hockey, Para alpine skiing, Para nordic skiing, Para snowboarding, Para biathlon, and wheelchair curling. The beauty of the Paralympics is that these competitions allow athletes with physical, visual, or intellectual disabilities to compete at a fair, elite level. The Paralympics began in Rome, Italy, in 1960.
This year's games did not disappoint with Team USA bringing home 13 gold medals, 8 of which came from Para Cross-Country Skiing, and finishing second overall behind China, which won 15 gold medals. There were notable performances by the USA Paralympic hockey team, which beat Canada for the gold medal. The USA took home an additional 2 gold medals in Para Snowboarding and 2 in Para Biathlon. However, the victories did not stop there. Team USA also won 2 gold medals in para snowboarding and para biathlon. Team USA left Italy with an impressive 5 silver and 6 bronze medals, in addition to their 13 gold medals. They won one of their silver medals in Para Cross-Country Skiing, 2 in Para Snowboarding, one in Parabiathlon, and one in Para Alpine Skiing. Finally, they acquired bronze medals in various sports, including 2 in Para Cross-Country Skiing, 2 in Para Snowboarding, one in Para Biathlon, and one in Para Alpine Skiing.
These victories are not only sweet for the athletes but also show a true representation of the USA. These games not only showcase pure athletic achievement but also allow athletes to compete at levels that would otherwise be impossible due to physical or intellectual obstacles. The Paralympics represent integrity, resilience, and equality across all facets of the sports they include. This not only brings joy to the athletes, but viewers as well. In the 2024 Paris Paralympics, the audience viewership broke records with over 4.1 billion people tuning in. Along with records being broken, this year's Paralympic Winter Games had over 600 athletes competing from 55 different countries, which is the most the games have ever had. It will be interesting to see how the games continue to develop as more and more athletes compete in golf. Every game seems to come with more elite competition than the last, so be sure to mark your calendars because the next Summer Paralympics will be held in Los Angeles, USA, in August of 2028, followed by the Winter Olympic Games, which will take place in the French Alps in 2030. In fact, you may have the chance to view the games live in 2034 because they will take place in the USA in Salt Lake City, Utah. Grab your American flags, they will surely not disappoint!
