USA Finishes Runner-Up in Baseball World Classic
The 2026 World Baseball Classic finished March 17th in Miami, Florida, with Venezuela taking the 3-2 victory over the USA. The two teams fought vigorously through the intense bracket with impressive wins over dominating countries, including the Dominican Republic and Italy. Though the USA was heavily favored to win the Classic, Venezuela showed resilience in the bottom of the ninth inning when pitcher Daniel Palencia struck out the USA’s Roman Anthony to secure the victory. This marked the first-ever World Baseball Classic for Venezuela. Emotions were high for Eugenio Suárez, who hit a double in the top of the ninth inning that led to Venezuela’s third run, which would ultimately win them the game.
However, the USA did not make it easy for Venezuela to take home the win, especially when Nevada native Bryce Harper hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, tying the game. The true culture of Venezuela was shown when the members of the team wore gold medals around their necks while chanting "Gloria Al Bravo Pueblo,” the Venezuelan national anthem, loud and proud. Suárez commented on the win by stating, “We are family here. That’s why we play with passion, with love. Because we feel that jersey, we feel our country in front of us. That’s why this is a lot for us as players, as people, as human beings, and as Venezuelans. Now, we are the champions.” Venezuela also has the title of World Baseball Classic MVP, which was awarded to Maikel García. García led Venezuela to their victory by hitting .385 with seven RBIs throughout the tournament. Though going home without a gold medal around their necks, the USA team had nothing but respect for Venezuela. Bryce Harper commented on his homerun after the completion of the game, “What a moment, I love the atmosphere, and I love the chance. Grateful for it. We tie it up right there, and I thought we had a great chance to win that game.” This is a competition that takes grit and determination to be successful, which the USA knows about with their previous World Baseball Classic win in 2017 over Puerto Rico. Both Venezuela and the USA trail behind Japan, which has taken home three World Baseball Classic wins.
