This Is Letterboxd Propaganda
Letterboxd is a site or an app, whichever you prefer, in which you can keep a movie diary, similar to a goodreads account. You can keep track of what you watched and when, choose to review and rate movies, keep a watchlist and more. If you’ve ever watched a movie then you should consider signing up.
In all seriousness, if you watch movies with some regularity, enjoy thinking about movies or talking about them with people, then Letterboxd is a service you may appreciate using. People interact with the site in a variety of ways from giving in-depth reviews and calculated ratings, commenting on what other people post, with a dedication to log every film they watch to barely updating what they’ve watched, instead choosing to keep up with friends, or only giving reviews, only telling jokes, and so on. There really is no one “right” way to interact with the site, just whatever works best for you.
The site is relatively easy to use, has non-invasive ads, and doesn’t lock key mechanics behind a paywall. It’s a great way to get recommendations and if you care about public opinion on a film, it serves as the people’s consensus, a more interactive space than the Rotten Tomatoes audience score and more accessible than Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Speaking of, if you have an IMDB account, there are ways to integrate your account information with a Letterboxd account.
Letterboxd pulls its film data from another service called The Movie Database, or TMDB. There are a good range of films already in that database, but if you ever find one that isn’t, then you can add it to TMDB and it will make its way to Letterboxd. And if you don’t want to go through the steps to do that part yourself, then send me the film details and I’ll put it in for you! Currently, Letterboxd is largely only movies, but there has been talks of eventually getting tv shows on the service as well, so even if you watch more tv then this could be a place for you to come to.
If you decide you want to join, there is already a community waiting for you! Several Centenary students have an account and are always looking to keep up with more people they know. All you need is an email and you can get started.
