An Evening of History
May 6, 2022
On April 24th at 6 pm, Devin Bureau ’22 hosted a concert at First Baptist Church in Shreveport featuring the works of two extraordinary female composers from the 20th Century.
His concert entitled “An Evening with The Boulangers” featured works from Lili and Nadia Boulanger, two sisters who were well-established musicians in France. They both composed a wide variety of music throughout their lives, but their music has not been highly circulated. His love of these two sisters led him to do research on them in hopes of bringing their works into the public’s eye. The concert featured works for orchestra and choir, organ, and solo voices, which is extremely diverse to have in a singular concert.
Bureau has been researching the two sisters for three semesters to satisfy the requirements for Departmental Honors on his Music Composition Degree. Throughout the Fall ’21 and Spring ’22 semesters, he has led rehearsals with a dedicated small group of vocalists who invested in his research. He also pulled many Centenary
instrumentalists, both students, and professionals, to fill out his orchestra. It was a long process that was very rewarding for everyone involved. Bureau not only organized but also conducted the entire concert. This was very fitting for him, as he plans to become a choral conductor as his career.
This process was without its trials. Due to the lack of circulation . . .
Big Event Recap

Saturday, April 2, 2022, marked the first time in three years since Centenary organizers conducted Big Event. If you find yourself asking what Big Event is, you are not alone. I am a junior, an upperclassman, and I had no idea what it was until it hit the Senate floor last Tuesday night during an SGA meeting as a resolution to reimburse the organizers for popsicles and equipment provided to the volunteers. And to what do we owe the obscurity surrounding this event?
COVID, of course!
But before the pandemic struck, Big Event was a revered Centenary tradition. Big Event is the one time a year that students and faculty specifically focus their efforts on providing assistance in the form of home improvement and landscaping to the Highland neighborhood surrounding Centenary’s campus. It’s our way of paying reparations for being young and obnoxious.
This year’s chief organizer was junior Jessica Cordova with the help of Dr. Sarah McCall, the Assistant Director of Community and Civic Engagement. Each year, students identify who would like assistance by handing outdoor hangers to residents in the neighborhood to fill out and return requesting which services they would like to receive. Students are provided with supplies to perform a range of services such as window washing, raking leaves, trimming bushes, weeding, mowing, and removing debris.
Other students, including myself, are assigned to tend Centenary’s Community Garden. Maintaining and improving the garden has . . .
