A Letter of Reflection and Ambition

Dear Reader,

Happy holidays and welcome to our final issue of the fall 2023 semester! I can speak for all of the editorial board when I say that we are so incredibly proud of what we have accomplished this semester. We’ve published articles, videos, podcasts, photojournalism pieces, and crosswords. Additionally, we’ve had several caf deck events this semester and had the amazing opportunity to interact with our dedicated readers face-to-face. Of course, we can’t forget about our printed poetry issue or the new stickers designed by Mackenzie Newlan. All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without our talented staff writers and the Student Government Association which funds all of our endeavors.

At the start of this semester, I wrote about Max De Pree’s quote: “We cannot become what we want by remaining what we are.” Our editorial board remains aligned with the spirit of this quote and its call for growth and change. Because we are aiming for growth, we have a couple of new things planned for this upcoming spring semester, and it is my absolute honor to introduce them to you.

The first big change that we are introducing is an advice column called “Dear Houla.” Please send us all of your burning questions, whether they’re about caf food, classroom etiquette, gossip, revenge, mortality, or any of life’s other general chaos. You can submit questions at this Google form.

We will also be bringing back Ups and Downs. For every issue, the editorial board will make a list of our current ups and downs. I am constantly referring back to past issues of The Conglomerate for inspiration; Ups and Downs is always one of my favorite sections to read, so I am very excited to bring it back to life. As a small appetizer for next semester, you can find past examples below.

Finally, we will be bringing back Centenary Secrets. Centenary Secrets was inspired by postsecret.com which is still active and still accepting secrets. To participate, please take a postcard and tell your secret anonymously. You can either send the card to campus box number 306 or slip it under our office door on the third floor of the SUB. Be brief (the fewer words, the better), legible, and creative! Please also only tell your own secrets. We’re not aiming for Gossip Girl but for fun interactivity!

I hope you are as excited about these new additions as I am!

Happy reading!

Sincerely,

Jordan Fong, Editor-in-Chief
